BASIC BASICS
FOR THE YOUNG CHRISTIAN
at St. Peter’s Anglican Church

Helpful Information for Families of our Children

Books of Common Prayer are available for each
student or parent to take home.
These are on a shelf in the hall outside the sanctuary.
St. Peter’s welcomes young children in the pews at an early
a congregation at worship becomes imprinted at an early
age in a child and compliments the family’s own worship.

After the Creed, (p. 71),  babies, toddlers, children ages 3-5
years are taken to a room for prayers, learning and play.
Boys and girls from the 1st grade to 5th grade and 6th- 8th
grade meet for more advanced learning.  All return to the
sanctuary after the sermon and Consecration of the
Elements of Holy Communion for the Lord’s Prayer (p. 82)
and remain with their families until the end of the service.

What Do the Youngest (Birth- 5 years)  Students Do?

We begin our time together with prayer at an altar.
Candles are lit, short prayers and a simple creed are said.
Spontaneous prayer is encouraged.  A blessing is said
prior to treats.  Church manners are emphasized . (We are
in the Lord’s house!).   Songs, games, creative crafts, tape
and video capabilities allow us to have a varied approach
to teaching and learning.  They also begin to learn the
Lord’s Prayer–and when this is done,  each child recites
this prayer before the congregation–and a special gift
marks the occasion.

What do we teach?

The Ten Commandments, Old Testament stories, The Life
of Christ, The Creed,  (simplified), moral virtues through
stories, videos, and little plays.  Some children are able to
learn more by heart.  When they do, they present their
learning to the congregation-once again, rewarded by an
outward and visible sign!!

The Seasons of the Church Year are told visually through
the small banners hanging in the Church and verbally
through hymns.  Our boys and girls carry the banners
from the church after the last hymn–symbolic of their
membership in the Church family of God..

What Do The 1st- 5th (Intermediate) Grade Students Do?

These students learn the Nicene Creed and recite it by
heart (and in song, if they prefer).  They learn  the Ten
Commandments, the Moral Virtues and Vices, the
Sacraments of the Church, lives of some Saints.
Scrapbooks prepared by previous classes are available for
study and the students are asked to add  psalms, songs,
cartoons, wise sayings, relevant news stories as well as
portions of poetry and fiction/nonfiction which illustrate
their studies.  Their own stories, poems and songs are added.

Advent, Christmas, Lent, (Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday,
Good Friday) Easter, Ascension, Whitsunday and Trinity –
as well as our Patronal Festival on St. Peter’s Day (June
29th), have special meaning,  attention and involvement for
our students.

What About the 6th- 8th (Senior)Grade Students?

These students continue learning the information and
training mentioned previously on a deeper level.  And they
begin preparing for Confirmation, with a special tutor.  The
Bible and the Book of Common Prayer are explored more
thoroughly.  Due to the small size of our  Sunday School,
we also depend upon our older students to help us from
time to time with the younger folks (another kind of learning
there!)

And the Teenagers?

These young folks are preparing to enter the adult stage of
church membership.  Acolyte  and Junior Altar Guild
training is part of that preparation.

Special events for our young people are difficult to plan
since most of them have many outside activities!!

P.S. Cleanup after classes is expected of our young folks
as well as our older folks.
